Future of Family Tree

20 Jul 2009 by Ron Tanner

Great News!!!

Thanks to all of your efforts and feedback many features developed as part of the Family Tree project will now be part of new.familysearch.org.

As I am writing we are currently testing the Family Tree project temple list being placed right in new.familysearch.org. Go check it out!! Go to beta.familysearch.org and login using your new FamilySearch login name and password. Then click on the Temple Ordinances tab – BAM!! you’ll see the temple reservation list that you helped us create as part of the Family Tree project. And when the beta is released, everyone on new.familysearch.org will be using this new Temple Ordinances feature. Thanks to you!!

As future releases are developed for new FamilySearch more and more features that are part of the Family Tree project will be placed into new FamilySearch. By releasing this work in steps we can get these great features out to all users quicker. As a consequence of this new direction we will be concentrating our efforts on putting these features into new FamilySearch rather than enhancing the Family Tree project. Eventually, when we get the key features into new FamilySearch, the Family Tree project will be removed from labs — don’t worry, it isn’t going to happen any time soon.

Thanks again for making the Family Tree project such a success. And keep checking back on labs as we begin to prototype some of the latest ideas we’ve been percolating.

Thanks,

Ron

The Family Tree supports the full temple process!

17 Mar 2009 by Tim Cross

In Folders, from the Summary tab, in the Temple Ordinances section, we can:

  • Check for and resolve duplicates with ordinances.  Always check this before clicking SUBMIT.
  • Enter Ordinances Manually.  If duplicates aren’t showing up and you know the work has been performed, click this link to report the ordinances.
  • Submit the ordinances to your Temple Tracking Page.  Note, this simply reserves the name and ordinances on the Temple tab.  Click on the Temple tab at the top of the page to continue the temple process — print FOR, etc.

In the Temple tab we can:

  • Print temple cards (Family Ordinance Request – FOR) if you want to perform the ordinances yourself.
  • Assign names to the temple if you want the temple to allow someone else to perform the ordinances.

The Family Tree prints Family Group Sheets

8 Dec 2008 by Tim Cross

To print a Family Group Sheet from the Family Tree, open a folder, click on the relationships tab, and click on the Family Group Sheet link.

The Family Tree expands and “collapses” trees.

8 Dec 2008 by Tim Cross

Until now, the Family Tree expanded trees without an easy way to collapse.  Now, when an arrow is clicked to expand the tree, the Family Tree flips the arrow horizontally.  Clicking a left arrow allows us to collapse the tree.

The Family Tree moves records!

8 Dec 2008 by Tim Cross

In Folders, from the Records Tab, the Family Tree allows us to:

  • Identify records that don’t belong by checking the checkbox to the left of the record.
  • Move the checked records to a new folder or folder that is open on the left by clicking the pulldown.  We can also drag and drop selected records to an open folder on the left.
  • Drag one open folder over the top of another folder to combine the two folders.

Some of the checkboxes are deactivated and the records can’t be moved.  This is a know problem and will be resolved in the near future.

Note:  We are updating live data on new.familysearch.org.

The Family Tree shows records!

19 Sep 2008 by Tim Cross

The Family Tree has added a new “records” vertical tab for each folder.  From this tab we are able to see what records exist in each folder.  Test the user experience of “moving” these records to a new folder or other folders.  Also, test the user experience of dragging and dropping one folder over another.

A new Summary is now displayed for each folder.

We are also able to navigate from the List View or Temple List to the Tree or Folders.

The Family Tree in Spanish and Japanese

29 Aug 2008 by Tim Cross

In the upper right corner of the login page is a pulldown.  From this pulldown, we can select to use the Family Tree in English, Spanish, or Japanese.

The Family Tree has a new Temple Tracking Page

20 Aug 2008 by Tim Cross

The Family Tree has added a new tab — Temple.  On this tab (page), patrons track:

  • Names placed on the Temple list (reserved / submitted),
  • Printed Temple cards, and
  • Completed ordinances.
