Record Search unavailable the first week of April

31 Mar 2008 by Tim Crabb

As Record Search continues to grow there is need to take the site down the first week of April to perform some maintenance.  We apologize for the inconvenience but Record Search will be back up better than ever soon!  While we are working please explore the other projects and tools on labs.familysearch.org and as always you can continue to leverage FamilySearch.org.

Search, Face Lift, Family Tree

20 Mar 2008 by Dan Lawyer

We just posted a new version of the Family Tree. We’ve given high-level navigation a face lift, provided a way to return to you in the tree and added (drum roll please…), the ability to search. Unfortunately, the search feature is not available through the demo – just to logged in users (sorry). As usual, click the feedback link and tell us what you think.

Oh, and we provided a fix for IE6 users that weren’t able to log in (applause).

Face Lift

  • More horizontal space
  • More consistent with new FamilySearch
  • Better navigation paradigm
  • Too much to describe
  • Still more to come…

Search

Hold on to your keyboard. You now have the ability to search for ancestors. Play around with these search features and let us know what you think. This is an area where we really, really, really want to hit a home run, so send us your feedback and great ideas.

Go to me

This is the first of several features intended to make it easier to navigate trees. Give it a shot.

Expand Your Tree

4 Mar 2008 by Dan Lawyer

We’ve added some great new features to the Family Tree. The most powerful of these is the ability to expand your tree beyond four generations. This ability to visualize and manipulate large trees starts to expose the true value of the Pedigree Viewer project embedded in the Family Tree.

Large Pedigree

We’ve also added the ability to see notes about a person. You can see notes by viewing more details about a person and then clicking on one of the conclusions or by clicking on the notes tab (see images below).

The third important feature in this update is the ability to go to a person page about someone in either of the family relationship views.

Research Wiki goes to 2nd Beta test period

2 Mar 2008 by Jim Greene

Ok, we have now officially moved to the new version of the Wiki–the one based on the MediaWiki software. It is all new software, a new URL, but the same content from the old version of the Wiki.  The link from the labs home page takes you to the new address. Remember though that we are still in a beta test. Beta test means that there will be times that the system is not available. You will see changes to the interface at times. Please understand though that we are taking extraordinary measures to make sure that any data you contribute is protected and will not be changed by anything we do in the beta testing. Feel free to contribute, edit, make changes and most of all contact us via feedback to give us ideas and suggestions.
One final point that I want to reiterate. This is your site, if there is something that you can change on it or to it, then go ahead and do it. You don’t need to ask permission. If we decide that we don’t like what you have done we will back it out. If you disagree with us then let us know. We are dedicated to the belief that “We are smarter than me.” The larger the community the more likely we are to have good information.
