Is this for true?
“For those of you who do not subscribe to the Ancestry Insider blog, there was an article posted yesterday that quotes a new information in the help pages on FamilySearch Labs. It states the church is going to make Family Tree available with read-only access to church members on the Wasatch Front in order to reduce duplication in temple work until NFS is totally rolled out. It gives this quote from the help pages of FamilySearch Labs:”
“The Family Tree project is replacing the International Genealogical Index (IGI) as a resource to verify that temple ordinances are complete. . At first, as the Family Tree project is made available to Church members along the Wasatch Front, those members will have read-only access.. Members will not be able to change data or clear names for submission to the temple using the Family Tree project.”

What is happening along the Wasatch Front is that the new system is being placed into the temples first. By doing this all of the ordinances done in these temples will be reflected in new.familysearch.org and family tree project (same database).
Additionally, these temples will be able to create and process new temple cards (as well as previously created temple cards). This will allow members as they get full access to new.familysearch.org and family tree project to take their requests to any temple and get cards and do ordinances there.
Since the ordinances will start flowing into new.familysearch.org from the temples, then patrons will need to go there (either through new.familysearch.org or family tree project – it is the same database) in order to see if the ordinance work is already done for their ancestor.
As this update to the temples moves through Wasatch Front, members in those districts can get read-only access to new.familysearch.org and family tree project (they are the same database – did I say this before?) to check for ordinances. However, with read-only, you cannot change data, add information or do temple processes through the system.

I’ve been “playing around” a little with the New Family Search for about a year now and the Family Tree program for the last few weeks. I just want to say that these programs are awesome just as they are–and I can see the soon-to-be-realized potential is amazing.
I started doing Family History a few years ago and was discouraged to see how many of my ancestors had their work done multiple times…and some of these people were converts themselves!! Since I’ve been doing FH on the NFS site, I haven’t had to print as much stuff, either (going paperless, except for essential documents). I’m happy to see more records are being scanned as PDFs and accessible via the Internet. So much of FH is now accessible from our own homes! I can do this while my kids nap or watch TV. It’s great. Really.
The future of FH is here. And I’m happy to be a part of it. FH is no longer just for Grandma or that great uncle genealogy guru…anyone with time to Blog or go on Facebook really has time to do FH now.

How can I get on Labs.Family Search.Org/Family Tree I need help to get on here
June 2nd, 2009 at 8:23 am
Mandy,
You first need to have an account on new.familysearch.org. If the system has been rolled out into your temple district, then you can register for an account. To register you will need your membership number and confirmation date. Once you have registered with new.familysearch.org, then you can use the Family Tree project.
To use the Family Tree project, just click on the Family Tree link. Then enter your username and password from new.familysearch.org and you should be in!
Thanks,
Ron

I have been researching my family for years and familysearch.org has been a great benefactor in my research. But now I have to be a member of the LDS Church to use the new.familysearch.org. I don’t think that will be beneficial to researchers who do not belong to the LDS Church. I am Catholic and I will not convert to use the new site. Sorry!

Sherry,
Our plan is as new.familysearch.org has the features that familysearch.org contains, then it will be released to everyone. May I suggest, in addition to your continued use of familysearch.org, looking into Record Search to help with your research. There are many records that we are working to digitize from microfilms and archives. These will show up in Record Search for your review. We are adding millions of names each week.
You can find Record Search on familysearch.org under Search Records, chosing Record Search pilot. You can also find Record Search on the labs.familysearch.org home page.
Thanks,
Ron

re: the “forgotten username/password” statements above:
Apparently no one has caught, since May 21, that the two instructions for remembering either your username or your password are exactly the same.
Are the instructions actually the same for both?
Shouldn’t the password reminder statement end with the word, “password”???
